The Dharma School Program

Dharma Schools within the Buddhist Churches of America provide youth from pre-kindergarten through high school with a foundation in Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, helping them to develop an appreciation and understanding of the Dharma and how it is encountered and experienced in daily life.

Classes are taught by volunteer teachers, and Dharma School students are introduced to the teachings of the Buddha through Dharma talks in Sunday services, interactive and discussion-based lessons, crafts, music, and other social and educational activities.

The Dharma School year usually aligns with the academic year from September to June, but families are welcome to attend any time of the year. Dharma classes are generally held every Sunday but some temples may meet less frequently. Check with your local temple for more details.

Federation of Dharma School Teachers’ League

The Federation of Dharma School Teachers’ League (FDSTL) serves as the national body for the nationwide coalition of Dharma School districts and individual temple Dharma Schools. FDSTL aims to support and connect temples and teachers with training, workshops, conferences, and resources to inspire and share the Dharma with current and future generations of Jodo Shinshu Buddhists.

With a focus on fostering collaboration and sharing resources, the organization plays a vital role in promoting the growth and development of Dharma school teaching practices.
