The historical Buddha is known as Shakyamuni Buddha, which refers to the clan of people that he belonged to in ancient India, or Gautama Buddha, which refers to his family name.

Shin Buddhism is a non-monastic tradition of Buddhism. The founder, Shinran, 1173-1263, was one of the first monks in the Japanese Buddhist tradition to marry and raise a family.
