BASICS OF BUDDHISM

“Buddha” literally means, “awakened one.” The path of Buddhism is the path to awakening or realization. We awaken to our true self, which is one with all beings, and all things. The historical Buddha is known as Shakyamuni Buddha, which refers to the clan of people that he belonged to in ancient India, or Gautama Buddha, which refers to his family name.

INTRO TO SHIN BUDDHISM

Shin Buddhism is a non-monastic tradition of Buddhism. The founder, Shinran, 1173-1263, was one of the first monks in the Japanese Buddhist tradition to marry and raise a family. Shin Buddhism is family-friendly, and is a path that all ages, from young to old, can participate in together. Although not well known in the west, Shin Buddhism is the largest tradition of Buddhism
in Japan.
