In 2015, the BCA National Council adopted the EcoSangha resolution.
Since then, many temples have implemented eco-friendly solutions like banning plastic bottles, using compostable packaging and biodegradable cleaning supplies, and many more.
This year, the BCA officially created an EcoSangha Committee, led by Karen Akahoshi, to help promote environmental solutions and conservation to all temples across the United States.
In April, some committee members put on Earth Day Sunday services to celebrate our Buddhist practices of interdependence and compassion and how they can help the planet for future generations in the spirit of mottainai.
They gave environmental Dharma talks, a Native American reading, story time for the children, sang the gatha “Precious Earth,” and put on green activities for all.
Saving the planet is core to our Buddhist principles. Won’t you consider having an Earth Day service too?
